"One UWI, One Alumni Family"

UWIAA Trinidad and Tobago Chapter Pays Tribute to

the late Professor Emeritus Dr. Winston Mellowes

It was with a profound sense of sadness that the UWI Alumni Associations, both at St. Augustine and throughout the region, received the news of the passing of Professor Emeritus Dr. Winston Mellowes.

It was only on December 2nd, 2023, that Professor Mellowes was bestowed with the

prestigious Distinguished Alumni Awards UWI by the Alumni Association, ( Trinidad and Tobago Chapter), capping off an outstanding career as an academic in Chemical Engineering, that spanned over five decades.

Professor Mellowes insisted on receiving this prestigious distinction in person while critically ill, which speaks volumes for the resilience, commitment, and determination that has characterized his life and outstanding career.

From his early education at St. Giles Primary School in Barbados to Combermere High School and the prestigious Harrison College, Professor Mellowes’ scholastic career has been one of distinction, receiving several awards for his outstanding academic achievements.

Education propelled him into several spheres of life. After completing his BSc, MSc, and PhD in Chemical Engineering at UWI, he did teaching stints in Barbados and was a Research Superintendent in Sugar in Jamaica. His publications are also featured in several academic and industrial journals. In addition, in 2021, he was recognized by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago when he was awarded the Chaconia Medal Gold for his contribution to the field of Education.

Professor Mellowes is also remembered for his outstanding community work. He was Chairman of the Methodist Children Commission for forty-one (41) years and was a local preacher for fifty-one (51) years, also sang in the Pan Pipers and Eastern Musical Choirs, and was a director of the Tunapuna Methodist Church Choir.

On the occasion of his passing, the UWI Alumni Association wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to his entire family and the University community at large, as well as

his legion of friends and associates. We pray that Almighty God help them to find courage in this difficult time, and may his soul rest in perpetual peace.
