"One UWI, One Alumni Family"

Dr Cecile Fray – UWI Mona MBBS Class of 1978

Honouring a Brilliant Medical Professional, Proud Alumna, and Unforgettable Spirit

The UWI alumni medical fraternity mourns the passing of Dr Cecile I. Fray, an outstanding medical professional, cherished friend, and proud graduate of The UWI Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona Campus’ Class of 1978. Dr Fray was an accomplished and respected physician whose distinguished medical career spanned over two decades, with expertise in Child Neurology, General Neurology, and Paediatrics. After graduating from The UWI in 1978, she went on to build her career in the United States, practicing in Bronx, New York, and later in Ardsley, New York, where she served as a dedicated neurologist. Her deep knowledge, compassionate care, and unwavering dedication to her patients earned her a stellar reputation in her field. She was not only a healer but also an advocate for children and families navigating complex neurological conditions, offering both clinical excellence and human kindness in every interaction.

Yet Cecile’s brilliance was not confined to her profession. She remained a proud and connected UWI alumna, keeping in close contact with her MBBS Class of 1978. She was the driving force that sustained these lifelong friendships, always reaching out, always bringing people together.

Her love for The UWI and for the medical fraternity shone brightly during the 2023 UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) Reunion. Dr Fray was the main architect of the entertainment segment, passionately championing the idea that the talents of medics should be celebrated in a revival of the traditional ‘Smoker’ event. Thanks to her vision and tireless energy, the showcase of music, humour, and artistic flair became one of the most talked-about and memorable features of the Reunion. Alumni left not only entertained but inspired, and the success of the evening stood as a testament to Cecile’s commitment to celebrating the full humanity of those in the medical profession.

Cecile was vivacious, gregarious, and famously full of life. She loved to dance, laugh, and engage in the joy of good company. Her zest for life, her hearty laugh, and her ability to make any gathering more vibrant made her beloved by so many. Alumni who encountered her hospitality, whether in New York, or elsewhere, knew her as being warm, generous, and always ready to share a good time.

Her passing leaves a significant void in the lives of her family, friends, classmates, colleagues, and the wider UWI and medical communities. The UWI Alumni Relations family, the UWIMAA, and her Class of 1978 mourn this tremendous loss alongside all who knew her. We extend heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones. Dr Cecile Fray lived with brilliance, served with compassion, and embraced life with joy. She will be deeply missed but long remembered. May her soul rest in peace and her legacy continue to inspire
