Mr. John Preston: Service to Environmental and Nuclear Science

We join the UWI community in paying tribute to Mr John Preston, who dedicated over four decades of service to The UWI Mona Campus. Mr Preston joined the University in 1977 as a Laboratory Technician at the Centre for Nuclear Sciences, which is now known as the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS). Throughout his long and distinguished tenure, he contributed significantly to the development and application of nuclear and environmental science in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
His expertise and commitment supported the Centre’s critical research in areas such as soil fertility, trace element analysis, and environmental monitoring, work that has had lasting impacts on agriculture, public health, and sustainable development in the region. Beyond his technical contributions, Mr Preston was known as a supportive colleague, a source of institutional knowledge, and a steady presence within the Faculty of Science and Technology. He leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and quiet excellence that will be remembered and appreciated by generations of students, researchers, and staff.
