Former Senator Delano Franklyn – A True Jamaica Patriot, Businessman and Statesman

Former Senator Franklyn was a practicing attorney-at-law and businessman. He was the managing partner of the Law Firm, Wilson & Franklyn, which was founded in 1998.


He was the chairman of Lano’s Transport and Rental Company Limited, Director of Cochen Experience Limited, Jamaica Cricket Foundation Development Limited, Invictus Education Solutions Limited and Wilson and Franklyn Publishing Company.

He was a special advisor to former Prime Minister, The Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller and chief advisor to former Prime Minister, The Most Hon. P. J. Patterson.


Former Senator Franklyn was appointed a Senator in 2002 and served as a Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade from 2002 to 2007.


As Minister of State, he was responsible for the Jamaica Diaspora Community, the Summit of the Americas, International and Regional Organisations such as the Organisation of American States, the Association of Caribbean States (which he chaired on behalf of Jamaica for one year), UNESCO, the Rio Group, and the Latin America Economic System (SELA). His portfolio responsibilities also included Consular Affairs, Marine and Aviation Affairs.


Regarding the Jamaica Diaspora Community, he initiated and had implemented the Jamaica Diaspora Conference; the Jamaica Diaspora Board; the Jamaica Diaspora Foundation; the Jamaica Diaspora Institute and the proclamation of Jamaica Diaspora Day, which is now celebrated on June 16th each year.


Achievements

Former Senator Franklyn was presented with the keys to the City of Miramar, Florida in the United States of America on February 23, 2005, which was declared ‘Delano Franklyn Day’, for his contribution to the Jamaica Diaspora and his support for nationals overseas.


During his years in High School, College and University, Mr. Franklyn was elected President of a number of student and youth organisations at the national level.


He is the only Jamaican to have been elected the President of both the National Secondary Students’ Council (NSSC) and the Jamaica Union of Tertiary Students (JUTS) and also the only Jamaican to have been elected President of the Guild of Undergraduates at the University of the West Indies, Mona (Jamaica) and Cave Hill (Barbados).


He received his secondary education at Kingston College and his tertiary education at the Mico Teachers College (now Mico University College), the University of the West Indies and the Norman Manley Law School.

He is a former chairman of the Governance Committee of the Mico University College, the Coffee Industry Board, the Michael Manley Foundation and the Asafa Powell Foundation.


In 1999 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and in 2000 he was named one of the distinguished graduates of Mico University College and received the Millennium Award. He was appointed a Notary Public in 2015. Mr. Franklyn has written and/or edited ten books.

COFFEE WITH CLASSMATES (CwC) , powered by Cafe Blue, at the Alumni House is a welcome addition to the alumni engagement activities held on the Mona Campus. Alumni, UWIAA executive members, UWI STAT Ambassadors and Faculty are invited to meet for a monthly coffee chat between 10:00 AM – 12noon for a delightful morning filled with casual conversations and camaraderie and a relaxed networking opportunity.  Café Blue, our sustainable supplier whose operations demonstrate their social responsibility in light of the global climate change challenge, provide their trademark Coffee and light refreshments. This event is proudly presented by Alumni Relations - IAD and the Campus Alumni Office of The UWI, Mona. Our next aim is to engage alumni in a monthly event between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. as well, for those who may attend at a later time of day - so look out for those details soon.
