Current & Future Alumni Soaring - CCJ Moot Competition

The XII Annual Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) International Law Moot Competition 2023 was held in Trinidad and Tobago, at the seat of the CCJ. It was established in 2009 as an in-person activity to orient law students across the region in the processes and procedures of the court while helping them become more familiar with the Court's Original Jurisdiction (OJ). The Moot Competition focuses on a fact pattern which seeks to interpret and apply the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (RTC) concerning the freedom of movement of trade, services, people, capital.

In this year's competition, the fact pattern concerned the inability of a Saint Lucian and Grenadian National to practice law in Trinidad and Tobago after pursuing legal studies in the UK because of the existence of legislation in Trinidad.

7 Law Schools and Faculties of Law participated in the competition, where the Norman Manley Law School emerged victorious with the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus receiving the Best Overall Academic Institution and 2nd place.

Our UWISTAT Ambassador and Alumni Ambassador participated in this competition and were among the top prizes. For the first time, the Sir Henry Forde Award for the Best Oralist was won by UWISTAT Cave Hill President, Mr. Rahym Augustin-Joseph. This is a new prize introduced at this Moot to recognise outstanding performances by individual advocates. It is named after Barbadian attorney, Sir Henry Forde who was among the first attorneys to appear before the court when it was established in 2005.

Mr. Ronaldo Richards, also a UWISTAT Alumni Ambassador, was a member of the winning Norman Manley Law School Team as Senior Counsel.

The UWISTAT Corps Family congratulates our Ambassadors for their outstanding work in advancing regional integration, as one of our pillars of UWISTAT.
