The UWIAA Trinidad & Tobago - Distinguished Alumni Awards 2023

35 outstanding alumni of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus have been bestowed with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Awards at a Gala Ceremony held on Saturday 2nd December 2023, at the UWI Teaching and Learning Centre in St. Augustine.  Former presidents of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Justice Paula Mae Weekes, ORTT, and Justice Anthony Carmona, ORTT, were each bestowed with the newly designed Pelican Award. Justice Carmona also delivered the feature address at the awards ceremony.

In addressing the group of distinguished awardees, the former president said The UWI must at all times seek to produce service oriented leaders, rather than leaders only driven by power. He added, service leadership demands the establishment and continuance of a “leader’s connectivity “to the people at all times.

He emphasized that service leadership is about the “common good and the exaltation of the common good”. Justice Carmona added, it must also be about the realization of social and economic benefits that reverberate to all strata of society, which also installs a sense of hope, as well as providing the mechanism for a happier and better society.

The Distinguished Awardees were drawn from a wide range of disciplines and professional backgrounds including medicine, engineering, academia and the energy and banking sectors.

The event was hosted by the UWI Alumni Association, Trinidad and Tobago Chapter as a part of The UWI’s 75th Anniversary Celebration.
